The optimistic plan: Hiking the Beara Way in Ireland (my 2nd home) – roughly 220 k’s
Praying for loads of lovely Irish sunshine instead of ‚four seasons in a day‘. It’s a red line…

June 2, 2026 update: And did it – I hiked the bloody Beara Way and in pretty shite weather most of the time – excuse my French. 200 k’s give or take a few. Follow the blue line… Starting in Killarney on May 13 and ending it clockwise in Kenmare on May 21.

Little did I know….

Der🐻 Beara Way – 200 km in retrospect:
👍 Was I liked quite a bit:
Very wild, raw & scenic! ⛰️
Lovely locals 🥰- like the farmer who welcomed me to Allihies 🤝, the ☕️shop owner who let me eat my my own food with her tea 🫖, the airbnb host who gave me a spontaneous local history and sights tour
Not overcrowded at all – I hardly met any other hikers on trail
The trail is generally in ok conditions & fairly well signed
Tea & scones 🇮🇪🫖
The basecamp – Foley’s Hotel – in Killarney
Reliable and punctual public transport🚂🚌🙌
👎 Was I liked a bit less:
Accommodation prices in Dublin are absolutely shocking!! 😱
Midgets! – tiny mosters that left incredible bite marks all over me 🦟
The weather – no day without rain ☔️
Walking on small & narrow roads with always more cars than you’d think
Very swampy, boggy trail, especially on the last days 💦
It was quite challenging to find half-descent camp spots ⛺️due to either the lay of the land or sheep farming sprawl 🐏🐑
Interesting: Rhododendrons 🌸 are actually considered invasive to 🇮🇪 & a threat to local plants 🍀
